Community Contribution #2- Analyzing Your Digital Identity

While creating my Visitors and Residents map I realized how differently I use each different platform. There were very few that were anywhere near the middle of my chart. The closest to the middle was Zoom since I use that both personally and institutionally. I also feel like I am a visitor yet also a resident of the platform. Sometimes when on zoom I am just watching a class silently while other times I am in an active conversation with someone. This platform was the hardest for me to decide where I should place it as my interactions with it were so all over the place. It is a part of my professional network but also by personal one. Microsoft Teams and gmail were similar to zoom but leaning a little more to one side or the other. Teams I mostly use for school or work so it was a little more leaning towards institutional while gmail is a big mix of personal and institutional things, hence why it landed pretty much in the middle of those two. Both are big parts of my professional network, I use them both frequently in my professional life and will likely continue to for a long time. I felt like I was more of a resident on gmail than zoom though since I find myself actually interacting more with others there than zoom. LinkedIn and Brightspace were very much on the institutional side of the map since I only use those platforms for school and work. I have a LinkedIn account though at this moment I don’t really use it. I grew up in a small town so it wasn’t really useful for finding jobs, now that I am living here in Victoria though I do think it could be a lot more useful as a professional network as I go forward in my career. Brightspace is only used for my education here at UVic so it is part of my professional network but only for the time being while I complete my degree here. After that I doubt it will still be a part of it. Google was right in the middle of the Institutional and personal line but it leaned very much to the visitors side. This is because I only use it when I need something from it. I am not permanently placed on the platform like I am on TikTok or instagram. I use google for a lot of different things though, I’d say pretty equally between my personal and professional life which is why I placed it so central.

Here is my map!
